Brief Curriculum Vitae

I was born in Athens, the capital and largest city of Greece, in the summer of 1980. I received the Engineering Diploma (5 years) in Computer Engineering and Informatics, the M.A.Sc. degree (with distinction) in Signal Processing and Communications, and the Ph.D. degree (best Ph.D. thesis award) from the Computer Engineering and Informatics Department (CEID), School of Engineering (SE), University of Patras (UoP), Rio–Patras, Greece in 2003, 2005, and 2010, respectively. From January 2019, I am an Assistant Professor for Wireless Communication Systems and Signal Processing at the Department of Informatics and Telecommunications, School of Sciences, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA) (also known shortly as University of Athens), Athens, Greece and a member of its Communications and Signal Processing division, as well as an associated faculty with ATHENA Research and Innovation Center. From April 2022, I am also serving as a Principal Researcher at the AI and Digital Science Research Center, Technology Innovation Institute, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. My research and development activities in the general areas of algorithmic design, optimization, and performance analysis for wireless communication networks with emphasis on multi-antenna transceiver hardware architectures, active and passive reconfigurable metasurfaces, integrated communications and sensing, millimeter wave and THz communications, and distributed machine learning have been extensively disseminated via demos and prototypes, journal and conference publications, technical reports, and intellectual property. My professional and research profiles as well as publications and citations are also available at LinkedIn, Google Scholar, ResearchGate, dblp, Scopus, Academia, Web of Science, and ORCID.

My research, development, and teaching career started during my undergraduate studies, where I served as a Research and Teaching Assistant at CEID's Signal Processing and Communications Laboratory. After my one year mandatory military service in Hellenic Navy, I joined the National Center for Scientific Research–"Demokritos," Athens, Greece as a Research Fellow and Ph.D. scholar of the Wireless Communications Laboratory, Institute of Informatics and Telecommunications. I also collaborated with the Institute for Astronomy, Astrophysics, Space Applications and Remote Sensing of the National Observatory of Athens and the Institute of Accelerating Systems and Applications, which is affiliated with NKUA and the National Technical University of Athens. During the academic summer semester of 2011, I have been an Adjunct Lecturer at the Department of Informatics and Telecommunications, University of the Peloponnese, Tripolis, Greece. For the period 2011–2014, I have been a Senior Researcher at the Athens Information Technology (AIT) Center for Research and Education, Athens, Greece where I was involved with the technical management of several European research and innovation projects, and lectured several mathematics courses for the joint B.Sc. program in Computer Engineering with Aalborg University in Denmark. Within the year 2012, I also collaborated with the Telecommunication Systems Research Institute, Technical University of Crete, Chania, Greece. From November 2014 till the beginning of January 2019, I was a Senior Research Engineer at the Mathematical and Algorithmic Sciences Lab, Paris Research Center, Huawei Technologies France SASU delivering statistical signal processing and machine learning algorithms for the physical and medium access layers of the IEEE 802.11 standards' family, 5G networks, and beyond, as well as designing transceiver hardware and networking architectures and studying their fundamental performance limits. For the academic year 2020-22, I was a collaborating academic staff member at the Hellenic Open University, Athens, Greece. I have received the IEEE Communications Society Best Young Professional in Industry Award 2018, the EURASIP Best Paper Award of the Journal on Wireless Communications and Networking 2021, the IEEE Marconi Prize Paper Award in Wireless Communications 2021, and a Best Paper Award from the IEEE Global Communications Conference (GLOBECOM) 2021.

I am currently serving, or having served, as an Editor for various IEEE, Elsevier, and ITU journals (including IEEE Transactions on Communications, IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications, IEEE Communications Letters, and IEEE Wireless Communications Letters), as well as acting as a Reviewer, Member of the Technical Program Committee, and Chair for many top-level international journals and conferences on signal processing and wireless communications. I am a Senior Member of the IEEE, IEEE Communications Society (ComSoc), IEEE Signal Processing Society, IEEE Information Theory Society, EURASIP Technical Area Committee on Signal Processing for Communications and Networking (serving as vice-chair for the period 2022-2024), and a registered Professional Engineer at the Technical Chamber of Greece. For the period 2022-2023, I serve as a Distinguished Lecturer of the IEEE ComSoc. I am also actively involved with the ComSoc Radio Communications, Communication Theory, and Signal Processing and Computing for Communications technical committees, having served as Standards Liaison for each of the latter two committees for two consecutive years.
